VATICAN CITY - Pope BENEDICT XVI

100 EURO GOLD COIN Year 2011

Raphael's Rooms: the Room of Heliodorus

Very Rare *RR* Only 1,100 pieces minted

PROOF in Original Vatican Mint packaging

Perfect with outer case - complete

Montenegro Proof catalog reference euro 3,200.00

Located along the path of the Vatican Museums leading to the Sistine Chapel, Raphael's Rooms were part of the apartments that Julius II della Rovere had chosen as his residence. Initially, the task of decorating the ceilings had been entrusted to several artists, but in 1508, Bramante introduced Raphael, who immediately began working on the Room of the Segnatura. Given his incredible talent, the Pope decided to have him decorate all the rooms, effectively dismissing the other artists. Raphael worked on the rooms from 1508 to 1520, and the Room of Heliodorus was frescoed between 1511 and 1514. This room was initially intended for the Pope's private audiences, and on its walls, there are four frescoes: the Mass of Bolsena, the Liberation of Saint Peter, the Encounter of Leo the Great with Attila, and the Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple. The latter work, which gives the room its name, was chosen to be represented on our 100 euro coin and depicts the biblical episode of Heliodorus, chancellor of the king of Syria, who, after stealing the treasure of the Temple of Jerusalem, is caught and expelled by a divine knight and two young men.

Raphael's Rooms: the Foligno Madonna

Very Rare *RR* Only 999 pieces minted

PROOF in Original Vatican Mint packaging

MISSING Outer cardboard case

Montenegro Proof catalog reference euro 3,200.00

This year, the 100 euro coin depicts Raphael Sanzio's (1483-1520) Foligno Madonna, now in the Vatican Pinacoteca, created 500 years ago commissioned by Sigismondo de' Conti, secretary to Pope Julius II, for the altar of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. The Virgin with the Child is depicted as she appears, according to the Golden Legend, to Emperor Augustus on Christmas Day: Saints Francis, John the Baptist, and Jerome, Doctor of the Church, participate in this transcendental experience along with the donor himself. The masterpiece located in Foligno never attracted much attention from visitors until it was transferred to the papal court and became an icon of Western culture. The coin, created by artist Antonella Napolione, reproduces a part of the painting, highlighting the central subject of the Urbino artist's work.

VATICAN CITY - Pope FRANCIS I

100 EURO GOLD COIN Year 2013 First Year of Pontificate

Raphael's Sistine Madonna

Very Rare*RR* Only 999 pieces minted

PROOF in Original Vatican Mint packaging

Outer cardboard missing

Montenegro Proof catalog reference euro 3,100.00

The Sistine Madonna is an oil painting on canvas created by Raphael between 1513 and 1514 and preserved in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden. For more than two centuries, the work in its original location remained almost unknown, but in 1754, its acquisition by Augustus III, Prince of Saxony, aroused general interest (also due to the significant amount paid). It was mainly the exponents of classicism and romanticism who discovered it during the nineteenth century and made it one of the most admired, cited, and studied paintings in figurative art. Today, the "Sistine Madonna" is considered one of the icons of the Renaissance, known worldwide like Leonardo's "Mona Lisa" and Botticelli's "Venus". To celebrate the 500th anniversary of this masterpiece, the Philatelic and Numismatic Office chose an interpretation by artist Daniela Fusco, who on the reverse of the 100 euro coin, the first numismatic gold issue of Pope Francis's Pontificate, depicts two details of the painting: the Virgin holding the Child Jesus and the two cherubs at her feet.
